Europe and North America both lost ~16% of their reservoir storage by 2022 and may both lose 28% by 2050. Removing sediments from all EU reservoirs could cost €10–18 billion annually using venting, sluicing, flushing, or hydraulic dredging (Panagos et al., 2024). The chart shows estimates of the annual cost of addressing reservoir sedimentation, including dredging, excavation, flushing, venting, sluicing, and check dams, by region and country from ~2023 to 2050, where costs increase due to accelerated sediment accumulation, an annual inflation rate of 2%, and, assumedly, without more effective mitigation measures.
